The SANAS103 lifeboat was called out early last night to an incident in the at Vereda Ponta de São Lourenço.
The alert was given at 7:20 pm by the Command and Control Center of the Coastal Rescue Center, after reports that two young men, of Italian nationality and around 20 years old, had thrown themselves into the sea in the area of Cais do Sardinha and swam towards Ponta de São Lourenço, says SANAS on its social network page.
The search operation was coordinated by the Funchal Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRSC Funchal), which requested the assistance of the lifeboat assigned to the Santa Cruz Lifeboat Station.
In the same note, at 7:35 pm, SANAS103 was already on its way to the location to ascertain the whereabouts and health status of the individuals, whose whereabouts were unknown.
A few minutes later, confirmation arrived, via telephone contact, that the two young men had returned to land under their own power and were unharmed.
“Thoughtless, negligent and careless acts that, in addition to activating emergency services, put lives at risk in a reckless and unconscious manner.”
SANAS103 was demobilized and resumed its state of readiness.
