The Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters (BVM) are conducting a complex and time-consuming search, rescue and mountain rescue operation at Pico do Areeiro. According to a firefighter source, the victim is in critical condition after falling from a cliff approximately 150 to 200 meters high.
The tourist, whose age has not yet been released, was at the start of the recommended and authorized trail when he allegedly went over the safety balcony and headed towards a dangerous area, where he ended up slipping and falling.
Initially, the Civil Defense helicopter attempted to carry out the rescue, but the operation was aborted for security reasons, given the impossibility of accessing the area where the victim is. As such, the rescue mission is being conducted overland, forcing the BVM’s high-angle mountain and rescue team to assemble specialized equipment to reach the tourist’s location and perform the rescue.
