Levada do Rei begins at the Water Treatment Station in Quebradas, São Jorge. The trail winds along the São Jorge valley, providing a remarkable chance to discover a variety of herbs and medicinal plants, accompanied by informative descriptions along the way. The path starts in an exotic woodland filled with introduced plant species, where you can take in the stunning agricultural scenery of São Jorge and Santana.
As you continue, the route leads into one of the best-preserved sections of the Laurissilva Forest — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. In this area, you’ll encounter an impressive diversity of native flora and birdlife, including the vibrant Firecrest and the sociable Chaffinch.
The walk also passes beneath a small waterfall before arriving at the first destination point, Ribeiro Bonito. This secluded area offers a true immersion in nature, where the only sounds are those of the surrounding forest and flowing water.
After a brief rest, the return journey follows the same path, giving you another chance to appreciate the forest’s enchanting atmosphere. This magnificent levada trail promises an unforgettable experience, showcasing the pure, untouched beauty of Madeira’s natural landscape.
