With an investment of around 150,000 euros, 30,000 more than last year, this year’s edition promises to be “the biggest” of the Funchal Jazz Festival. There will be eight days of Jazz with more than 16 concerts spread over two stages in the Auditorium of Jardim Municipal, from July 1st to 5th, and in Parque de Santa Catarina, from July 6th to 8th.
“It will be the biggest Funchal Jazz Festival ever”, said the artistic director of the event, Paulo Barbosa, during the presentation of the 22nd edition, which took place this Thursday, in the Main Hall of the Municipality of Funchal (CMF).
“We increased the value we had been allocating by 20%”, highlighted Pedro Calado, president of the CMF, highlighting the “quality” of the poster, which involves national and international jazz musicians, whose main aim is to reach more audiences.
The 10 concerts at the Jardim Municipal Auditorium will be held free of charge, accessible to the entire population, revealed Pedro Calado, stressing that it is a “privilege” for the Municipality that Jazz is accessible to the entire population, also being a opportunity to give a stage to young artists, trained at the Conservatório – Escolas da Artes, some residing in Funchal, others who are working in mainland Portugal or abroad. He highlighted, on the other hand, the circumstance of students taking the aptitude tests of the Professional Jazz Course at the Conservatory.
Access to the concerts at Parque de Santa Catarina cost 15 euros/day or an integrated ticket, 35 euros, for 3 days, with free admission for children up to 12 years old.
The mayor refers that this is “possibly one of the only opportunities in the whole world” of, “for this amount”, Funchal receives the performances of “musicians of such high quality recognized worldwide”. “It is a privilege to provide the entire population with a jazz event of this quality and with these musicians”, he praised, adding that there will also be street entertainment, in a logic of integrating Funchal Jazz into the city.
