Madeira once again won, for the 9th consecutive time, the ‘World Travel Awards’ award as ‘World’s Leading Island Destination’. The announcement was made late this afternoon, at the iconic Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubai, at the gala for the 30th edition of the WTA world awards.
The regional secretary of Tourism and Culture and president of the Madeira Promotion Association, Eduardo Jesus, highlights that the award that, since 2015, has been awarded to Madeira, is “the consolidation of recognition for the work that has been developed by the entire sector in order to position the Region as a unique destination, which, throughout the 12 months of the year, captivates visitors from all over the world, due to its unique characteristics in terms of Nature, Culture, varied experiences and Identity” .
Taking the opportunity to congratulate all the other winners at the gala that took place this evening in Dubai, Eduardo Jesus recalls that this award proves that the options taken with regard to the position that Madeira has taken in recent years, in terms of promotion and communication, as well as in certifying the sustainability of the destination, they have been the most successful. “This award belongs to Madeira, to all those who work daily in the tourism sector, and, above all, to all those who choose us and who visit us, often repeatedly, because they feel at home here. It is this emotional connection that sets us apart from other destinations in the world”, he highlights.
In this recognition, Eduardo Jesus also includes the Madeira Promotion Association team “which has been unsurpassable, taking advantage of all the opportunities that have arisen to communicate, allowing the archipelago to remain at the top of preferences and an entire international knowledge that is growing in relation to our Region”.
In the race with Madeira for this now won prize were 19 other destinations from all continents: Bali (Indonesia), Barbados, Cook Islands, Crete (Greece), Fiji (Pacific Ocean), Philippines, Hawaii (USA), Turks and Caicos (Caribbean), Jamaica (Caribbean), Little Corn Island (Nicaragua), Maldives (Indian Ocean), Mallorca (Spain), Mauritius (Indian Ocean), Saint Lucia (Caribbean), Sardinia (Italy), Seychelles (Indian Ocean) , Singapore, Tahiti and Zanzibar (Tanzania).
It is worth remembering that, on September 29th, the Region received the award for Best Island Destination in Europe, in the European edition of the WTA.
The ‘World Travel Awards’, created in 1993, are awarded annually to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries. They constitute one of the main awards in the different sectors that appear on restricted lists and are awarded after online voting by the public and tourism professionals.
